FAQs

I want to buy a trial lesson for someone for a gift. What will they get?
We will provide you with a WELCOME PACK (which includes the BGA Modern Elementary Gliding Book) which you can present to them on their birthday or special occasion. They will get a soaring flight, duration dependent on voucher type, or the equivalent in flying time (i.e., aerotow or multiple winch launches) if the conditions are not soarable. They will also receive a certificate after their flight! For more information about what is included please click here.

 Can anyone fly a glider?
There are very few people who cannot fly a glider. Gliding is open to people of all ages. Due to glider design limitations we unfortunately cannot fly  people who weigh over 15 stones (95kg) or people who are over 6' 3" tall (1.9m). you must weigh between "minimum weight" and "maximum  weight" The minimum age for flying solo is 16. If you wish to fly solo you must meet the medical requirements for driving a car.

What if I have never flown before?
Whether you have a trial lesson or want to become a member of our club, no previous flying experience is required. Experienced pilots are also welcome though!

 What will I fly in?
You will fly in a K13 two seater training glider. If you continue your gliding adventure your training will be in this type of glider and your initial solo flights will also be done in this. After solo you will be able to fly our single seater K6 glider.

 When can I fly?
In the summer at Ridgewell we fly on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Where do you fly?
We fly from Ridgewell Airfield during the summer months (approximately April to October). Contact us for details of flying during the winter months (approximately November - March).

How much does it cost?
Gliding is not as expensive as people may think and is considerably cheaper than powered flying. Trial lessons start from £70.00 and members of the club can fly from as little as £7.50 for a winch launch. For more information on trial lessons please click here. For more information on membership please click here.

Do I have to book?
To save disappointment we advise you book in advance. However if you wish to fly on a specific day please call us before you turn up to see if we can fit you in.

How do I join?
You can become a member of our club straight after your trial lesson. You will get a refund of your trial lesson fee and your flight will be charged at member rates. You will need to fill out a membership form and have payment (either cheque or debit/credit card). If you would like to join later then please contact us for a membership form. You can contact us by telephone, mail or e-mail: for contact details please click here.

For more information on membership please click here.

How do I get to your airfield?
For directions on how to get to either the Ridgewell Airfield please click here.

What should I bring with me?
When coming for your trial lesson please bring your gift voucher with you as this will be needed to claim your flight with us on the day. If it is a very sunny day then a hat and sunglasses would be advisable! We will also need to know your weight to ensure glider balance - so if it's been a long time since you jumped on those scales now's the time!

 What should I wear?
This is obviously dependent on weather but airfields can be surprisingly cold and windy at any time of the year so wear lots of layers of clothing.  We also advise you to bring a waterproof jacket especially if the weatherman forecasts rain! A comfortable pair of trousers are better than anything else and we recommend you wear a pair or supportive boots or trainers. If it is likely to be sunny then a hat, sunglasses and sun  block are a  must!

Do I need to bring my own food and drink?
We have a selection of snacks (crisps, chocolate etc.) and drinks (tins, juices and water) that can be purchased at the airfield. However, please  feel free to bring your own food and drinks; or packed lunch or picnic should your flight fall within lunch time! Should you wish to eat out locally  before or after your flight there are some excellent pubs nearby.

Can I take a camera?
It is no problem to take a camera with you on your flight. However, if you choose to do so then please be advised that for safety reasons you will  unfortunately not be able to fly the glider.

Is gliding dangerous?
Gliding is a safe sport, but like any sport has risks involved. The British Gliding Association (BGA) lays down rules and regulations for operations,  training and glider maintenance. Safety officers are responsible for the safety of BGA affiliated gliding clubs and are appointed at national,  regional and club level. Our instructors are BGA qualified and are very experienced pilots. Our gliders are inspected annually by qualified  inspectors and are also inspected daily before each flying day to ensure their continued airworthiness. For more information please visit the BGA  website by clicking here
